Join the Lab

The lab is a mix of backgrounds – dynamics and control, high-performance computing, category theory, programming languages – pointed at one problem: making scientific models composable enough to build out of parts instead of from scratch. We are always looking for students and researchers who want to work on that, whatever they trained in.

We are accepting applications for

  • PhD students in both MAE and CISE. Mathematically minded students would benefit from the MAE degree program specializing in Dynamics, Systems, and Control.
    • For MAE applicants, the lab is particularly well suited to students interested in either Dynamics, Systems, and Control for optimization and dynamics projects or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the Decapodes project.
    • For CISE students, the lab is a good fit for students interested in High Performance Computing (HPC), Machine Learning, Data Science, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Computer Algebra, and Programming Language Theory.
  • Research projects for undergraduates and graduate students in MAE, CISE, and Math.
  • Research scientists and postdocs in MAE, CISE, and Math.

What the work looks like

Most of what we do ends up as software. Every project on the research page is a line of papers and a Julia package in the AlgebraicJulia ecosystem, written with Evan Patterson’s group at the Topos Institute and used by people outside the lab. That means the mathematics has to be right and the code has to run, and lab members spend their time on both.

Members present at conferences in applied category theory, computational science and controls, and the lab runs a weekly lab meeting where one or two people give a talk – a practice talk, or a walk through a problem nobody has solved yet.

Where people go

Recent graduates have gone to national labs, to the Topos Institute, and into faculty positions; the news page follows where people land, and the members page lists everyone who has been through the lab.
