James Fairbanks named an ASEMFL Rising Star

The Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida named James Fairbanks a Rising Star at its 2025 Annual Meeting in November.

The Academy draws its membership from universities across the state, including FAMU, FIU, FSU, Palm Beach Atlantic, UCF, UF, Miami and USF. The Rising Star award recognizes early-career researchers among them.

The award is for the lab’s work on applied category theory as engineering practice: taking the compositional structure that mathematicians write down and building software that scientists and engineers can run. That work spans multiphysics simulation, optimization and control, and coordination.
